Music Theory and History Classes

Music Theory

We offer an excellent Music Theory program unsurpassed in the South Surrey / White Rock area. The length of the course varies depending on the commencement date and exam rotation. Classes are 1 hour in length. A minimum of 3 students is required to constitute a class.

Theory Class Tuition

Tuition & annual registration fee is due at the commencement of each course. Payment may be made by cheque in full OR in monthly payments with post-dated cheques dated for the 1st of each month. Tuition does not include the RCM exam fee or cost of materials.

Harmony

Level 9 Harmony

Students are introduced to chords in various forms, pedal points, sequences, more complex modulation, non-chord notes, and forms.

  • Co-requisite: Grade 9 practical

  • Prerequisite: Level 8 Rudiments

  • Final exam length: 3 hours

Level 10 Harmony

Students continue to explore chords and inversions, pedal points, sequences, modulations and form.

  • Co-requisite: Grade 10 practical

  • Prerequisite: Level 9 Harmony

  • Final exam length: 3 hours

ARCT Harmony

Students continue their exploration of chords, modulations, two-part counterpoint, harmonization and analysis.

  • Co-requisite: ARCT in Performance

  • Prerequisite: Level 10 Harmony

History

History 9: An Overview (Formerly History I)

This course is an introduction to music history with an overview of four historical style periods including the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern Eras. Class instruction is in lecture format and includes access to an extensive music and video library.

  • Co-requisite: Grade 9

  • Prerequisite: Level 8 Rudiments

  • Final exam length: 3 hours

History 10: Middle Ages to Classical (Formerly History II)

History 10 explores four historical periods beginning with the Middle Ages and Renaissance and continues on to the Baroque and Classical eras. Class instruction is in lecture format and includes access to an extensive music and video library.

  • Prerequisite: Advanced Rudiments, History 9

  • Final exam length: 3 hours

ARCT History: 19th Century to Present (formerly History III)
